Direct Bilirubin Blood Test
Direct Bilirubin Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures levels of Direct Bilirubin also known as Conjugated Bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a waste product from the break down of old red blood cells which is processed by the liver for removal from the body. Direct Bilirubin is the water soluble form which is passed out of the liver. Elevated levels of direct bilirubin are often indicative of conditions such as viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, Biliary Disease and related conditions such as gallstones, tumors or scarring of the bile ducts.
Bilirubin testing is often done when someone is experiencing symptoms of liver disease. Results from a Direct Bilirubin test are often most useful when used with results from a Total Bilirubin test. Results of these two tests can help to distinguish between different types of disorders.
The Bilirubin, Direct test is also included as part of a Hepatic Function test.
Turnaround time for the Bilirubin test is typically 1 business day.
