Description:
Total and Direct Bilirubin Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures both total and direct levels of Bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a waste product from the breakdown of old red blood cells which is processed by the liver for removal from the body. Abnormally high bilirubin levels are often indicative of liver disease. High bilirubin levels can be caused by a number of conditions including hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcoholism, cholangitis, infectious mononucleosis, anorexia and anemia.
This test is usually ordered when someone has symptoms of liver disease such as jaundice, dark colored urine, nausea, abdominal pain or fatigue. Measuring both total and direct bilirubin can help a person's doctor to differentiate between different types of liver disorders.
Total and direct bilirubin are also included in a Hepatic Function Panel which provides several other measurements related to liver function.
Turnaround for this test is typically 1-2 business days.
