Bipolaris Allergy Test

Curvularia spicifera

Test Code: 602909
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Bipolaris Allergy Test

This test is used to measure a person's allergic reaction to Bipolaris, also known as curvularia spicifera.  Bipolaris is a species of mold that is typically found on plants and grasses.  It can sometimes affect agricultural crops such as rice, corn, and wheat.  While Bipolaris is most commonly found outdoors, it can also grow indoors on houseplants, wet carpets, and areas that are damp or water damaged.  Once inhaled, Bipolaris spores can cause respiratory allergy symptoms and may result in more serious health complications over time.  Common symptoms include red eyes watery, sneezing, coughing, itchy and rashy skin, and shortness of breath.  While most healthy people will have mild reactions. those with compromised immune systems, asthma, or other respiratory conditions may experience more severe symptoms such as chronic cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and wheezing.

Allergies are caused by a reaction in the body's immune system.  The body identifies certain substances as harmful and produces IgE antibodies against them.  These antibodies trigger the release of histamine which causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction.  The severity of the allergy will vary from one person to the next.  Blood allergy testing provides numerical results for IgE antibody levels to help determine how severe a reaction a person will have.  Positive allergy test results should be discussed with a person's doctor to determine the appropriate follow up.
