Description:
Blood Test for Cancer, Comprehensive (Female)
This package contains a selection of tests that can help to determine if a person may have certain types of cancer, including those which are more likely to affect women. Cancer is a number of related conditions that are characterized by a breakdown of the body's normal process of cellular production and growth. When cancer develops, new cells divide and reproduce unnecessarily, abnormal cells develop, and damaged cells survive when they would normally break down and die. Many forms of cancer cause the development of tumors, masses of tissue that can spread to and invade other tissues. There is often a risk of cancer cells traveling to other parts of the body and forming more tumors.
Diagnosing cancer is an involved process and typically requires more than simple blood tests. However, blood tests can give you an idea of what is going on inside your body by looking at numbers related to your immune system and identifying markers that are often present in people with some types of cancer. Results from these tests can help identify warning signs that someone may need to discuss with their doctor. These tests can also be helpful for people who have been diagnosed with cancer and need to monitor their condition or their response to treatment.
This package includes:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): a CBC provides a number of measurements include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Abnormal results can be indicative of a number of diseases including cancer.
- Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA): CEA is a tumor marker that is often elevated in people with various types of cancer including, colorectal, thyroid, breast, liver, pancreas, stomach, prostate, and ovarian.
- Cancer Antigen (CA) 15-3: A type of protein that is often found in breast cancer tumors.
- Cancer Antigen (CA) 125: A protein that is typically present on ovarian cancer cells.
- Carbohydrate Antigen (CA) 19-9: A protein most often associated with pancreatic cancer. It is also sometimes elevated in other types of cancer including gallbladder, colorectal, ovarian, lung, and liver.
- Cancer Antigen (CA) 27.29: A tumor marker that is typically present in people with breast cancer. It can be used to help determine their prognosis or monitor treatment.
- Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP): AFP is a tumor marker that is sometimes elevated in people with certain types of cancer including liver, ovarian, and testicular.
It is important to note that these tests cannot rule out the possibility of cancer. Not all cases of a particular type of cancer will show the same blood markers. If you have reason to suspect that you are at risk for cancer, it is important to discuss the matter with your doctor. Likewise, elevated levels on one or more of these tests are not enough to determine a positive diagnosis. Test results should be discussed with your doctor to determine the appropriate follow-up.
For a less comprehensive cancer screening, we also offer a Basic Female Cancer Panel. A Basic Cancer Panel and Comprehensive Cancer Panel for men are available as well.
Turnaround for these tests is typically 2-4 business days.
