Description:
C3a Complement Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures levels of Complement C3a in the blood. The complement system includes over 30 proteins in the blood which play an important role in the body's immune system. C3 makes up about 70% of the proteins in the complement system. C3 can be split into the components C3a and C3b. Measuring C3a levels can aid in the diagnosis of a number of illnesses as well as differentiating them from other conditions. Elevated C3a levels are often seen in people with asthma, autoimmune disorders such as lupus, inflammatory illnesses such as pancreatitis, chronic hepatitis C, colon or liver cancer, inflamed pancreas, and Lyme Disease. In Lyme Disease cases, C3a is typically elevated in recent acute infections but not chronic ones. For this reason, a complement C3a test can sometimes aid in identifying if someone has recently contracted Lyme Disease. People with lower than normal C3a levels may be at increased risk of suffering from infections and inflammation.
The Complement C3a test may be ordered when a person has an illness which is associated with inflammation. It may also be ordered when a person is suspected of having recently contracted Lyme Disease, especially if results from other testing methods have been inconclusive.
Turnaround for this test is typically 4-8 business days.
