Complement Total Ch50 Blood Test

Test Code: 001941
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Complement Total Ch50 Blood Test

This test measures the level of Total Complement or CH50 in the blood.  The Complement system is a series of 30-60 proteins that work to promote the function of the body's immune system and its response to inflammation and infection.  When one or more components of the complement system are deficient, it can lead to an inability to properly fight off infections or the development of an autoimmune disorder.  Measuring CH50 can help to determine if there is a deficiency in the complement system but it cannot identify which specific proteins are affected.  Abnormal results for a Total Complement test are often followed up with a test that measures a specific type of protein such as Complement C3 or Complement C4.

A CH50 test is typically ordered when a person has repeated unexplained infections or symptoms of autoimmune disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.  It can also be used to monitor treatment for conditions such as lupus.

Turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
