C3 & C4 Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures levels of Complement C3 and Complement C4 in the blood. The complement system includes over 30 proteins in the blood which play an important role in the body's immune system. Measuring one or more complements can help determine if an abnormality in a person's complement system is related to their health problems. Complement C3 and C4 are the ones which are most commonly tested. Deficiencies in complements can lead to increased risk of infections or developing an autoimmune disorder. Lower than normal complement levels are associated with a number of conditions such as increased bacterial infections, rheumatoid arthritis, cirrhosis, hepatitis, kidney disease, malnutrition, and septicemia. Increased complement levels may be associated with acute or chronic inflammation or conditions such as cancer, ulcerative colitis or thyroiditis.
This test may be ordered when a person has unexplained inflammation or fluid retention or if they have symptoms of an autoimmune disorder.
