Description:
Cortisol LC/MS Blood Test
This test measures cortisol blood levels using the liquid chromatography mass spectrometry methodology (LC/MS). Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. While cortisol blood testing can be used for a variety of purposes, an LC/MS Cortisol test is often ordered to aid in identifying conditions like Addison's Disease or Cushing's Disease.
Addison's disease is caused by adrenal insufficiency, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce too little of certain hormones including cortisol. Symptoms of Addison's Disease can include fatigue, weight loss, decreased appetite, darkening of the skin, low blood pressure, salt craving, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle or joint pain, irritability, and depression.
Cushing's Disease occurs from too much cortisol production. Symptoms of Cushing's can include high blood pressure, loss of bone density, acne, slow healing of cuts or infections, bruising easily, fatty deposits around the midsection or upper back, and stretch marks.
One or more salivary cortisol tests may be ordered along with a blood test or as a follow-up.
Turnaround for the Cortisol LC/MS test is typically 4-10 business days.
