Cryptococcal Antigen Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test is used to help identify someone who has been infected with Cryptococcus. Cryptococcus neoformans is a species of fungus found throughout the world in soil, rotting wood, and bird droppings. People who breathe in its microscopic spores can become infected. The majority of people who are exposed to cryptococcus do not get sick. However, people with weakened immune systems, such as those who have HV or have recently undergone surgery, may develop a serious illness. Cryptococcal infections can affect different parts of the body. Infection of the lungs can cause a pneumonia-like illness with symptoms that include fever, cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Infections can also spread to the brain causing Cryptococcal Meningitis which displays symptoms that include headache, fever, neck pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and light sensitivity. Cryptococcus infections cannot be spread from one person to another.
A cryptococcal antigen test is usually ordered when someone is displaying symptoms of infection, especially if they are immune-compromised. If the event of a positive result, this test will automatically perform a reflex titer test at no additional cost. One negative test result is not definitive proof that someone does not have a cryptococcal infection, especially if that person is experiencing symptoms. Repeat testing using the same methodology may be necessary.
The turnaround time for this test is typically 2-4 business days. Additional time may be necessary if the reflex is required.
