Ephedra

Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Ephedrine/Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) Blood Drug Test

This test looks for both Ephedrine and Pseudoephedrine in the blood.  While ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are both stimulants and decongestants, they are used for different purposes.  Ephedrine s most commonly used to relieve the symptoms of asthma.  It is also sometimes used to treat sleep disorders, low blood pressure, and myasthenia gravis.  Pseudoephedrine, commonly sold under the brand name Sudafed, is used in cold and flu remedies to relieve nasal and sinus congestion.  Both drugs can be used in the production of methamphetamine (crystal meth).  For this reason, they must be purchased over the counter with authorization from a pharmacist.  Ephedrine is also sometimes abused by athletes as a performance enhancer or weight loss supplement.  Both drugs can cause a variety of side effects including nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, vertigo, headache, nausea, insomnia, increases heart rate, and increased blood pressure. Overdoses can lead to heart attack, stroke, irregular heart rhythm, hallucinations, or death.

Ephedrine and Pseudoephedrine both have the potential of causing a positive result on a drug test that looks for amphetamines.  Their detection period in the blood is typically up to 2 days but may be less depending on how much a person is using.

This test is ordered when someone is suspected of taking ephedrine and/or pseudoephedrine improperly.  A Urine Ephedrine Test is also available.

Turnaround for this test is typically 10-14 business days.

At this time, Request A Test does not offer DOT (Department of Transportation) certified testing.
