Description:
Ephedrine Urine Drug Test
This test looks for Ephedrine in the urine. Ephedrine is a stimulant that is made from the plant Ephedra Sinica. Ephedrine is primarily used as a decongestant and had other medical uses when deemed appropriate by a doctor. It can be helpful in treating the symptoms of respiratory disorders like asthma. In the past ephedrine was a common component of weight loss supplements. However, due to potentially harmful side effects, it has been banned from being used for that purpose. There is still a high incidence of abuse of ephedrine by athletes who use it as a performance enhancer. Ephedrine can also be used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. For this reason, ephedrine is only available over the counter with authorization from a pharmacist. Side effects of ephedrine can include nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, vertigo, headache, nausea, insomnia, increases heart rate, increased blood pressure, sweating, and difficulty urinating. Extended use of ephedrine can lead to tolerance and addiction. An overdose can cause heart attack, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, stroke, and death.
This test is typically ordered when someone is suspected of abusing Ephedrine. Ephedrine is usually detectable in urine for 2-5 days after use but the detection time will vary from person to person depending on a number of factors. Positive results for this test will provide a numerical value for the level detected. A blood test that looks for ephedrine and pseudoephedrine is also available.
Turnaround for this test is typically 10-14 business days.
