Description:
Estradiol Blood Test (Labcorp)
What is Estradiol?
This test measures Estradiol levels in the blood. Estradiol is one of the primary components of estrogens. Estradiol concentrations are typically highest in non-pregnant, pre-menopausal women. During menopause, as ovarian function decreases, Estradiol levels drop significantly. Estradiol testing can help to monitor ovarian function in women with fertility issues. It may also be useful for women undergoing hormone therapy during menopause or girls experiencing signs of early puberty. Men can also be affected by irregular estradiol, either too much or too little.
What are the symptoms of high or low Estradiol?
In females, high estradiol can cause headaches, weight gain, irregular menstrual bleeding, fatigue, lowered sex drive, anxiety, and depression. Low estradiol levels in females can cause insomnia, mood changes, irregular periods, brain fog, and memory lapses.
In males higher than normal estradiol can cause lowered testosterone, erectile dysfunction (ED), lowered sex drive, infertility, loss of bone density, and excess breast fat tissue. Low estradiol in males can cause mood swings, fatigue, dry skin, and reduced libido.
What causes high or low estradiol?
In males, elevated estradiol can be caused by age, excessive alcohol intake, use of illicit drugs, liver disease, stress, or obesity. In females, menopause naturally lowers the levels of estradiol. Other causes of low estradiol in females include autoimmune disorders, an underactive pituitary gland, smoking, low body weight, birth control medications, and chemotherapy treatment.
Estradiol is often ordered with an Estrone Test.
How long does an Estradiol blood test take?
Turnaround time for the Estradiol test is typically 1 business day.
