Formaldehyde Allergy Test
This test measures a person's allergic reaction to Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a chemical that is best known for its use as a preservative. However, Formaldehyde is used for a variety of other purposes. It is used in the production of textiles, wood products, paper products, adhesives, paints, dyes, cleaning materials, and disinfectants. Formaldehyde is also present in a number of materials used in the medical, dental, and laboratory industries. The symptoms of an allergic reaction to formaldehyde can vary depending on how a person is exposed. Common symptoms include burning in the eyes, nose, or throat, skin rash, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, headache, and fatigue. Some people with an allergy may develop a condition known as allergic contact dermatitis from wearing clothes that have been treated with formaldehyde. This can result in patches of red itchy skin, blistering, and swelling in affected areas. These reactions are most common in areas that tend to have greater friction between the clothing and skin or where sweat accumulates such as the underarms, inner thighs, and back of the knees. Severe allergic reactions can cause anaphylaxis which may be life-threatening. People who are allergic to formaldehyde may need to be cautious about which type of products they use.
