Description:

G6PD (Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) Blood Test (Labcorp)

The Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehyrdogenase (G6PD) test may be used to determine G6PD deficiency.  Deficiency in G6PD can make red blood cells more vulnerable to breaking apart.  When the body cannot replace the destroyed red blood cells a condition known as Hemolytic Anemia can develop.  G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder which can be passed from parents to children.

This test is typically ordered when a person has symptoms such as jaundice, weakness, fatigue, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath or dark colored urine which may be indicative of Hemolytic Anemia.

Turnaround time for the G6PD test is typically 1-3 business days.
