|
Description:
Gestational Glucose Tolerance (4 Specimen) Test
This test measures glucose levels on 4 blood specimens collected over the course of 3 hours. Results from this test can aid in diagnosing gestational diabetes. Nearly 10% of pregnancies in the United States are affected by gestational diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body process glucose (sugar) into energy. Sometimes during pregnancy, hormones that contribute to the baby's development make it difficult for the body to produce enough insulin or properly use insulin. This causes blood sugar to become elevated. Diabetes during pregnancy can lead to complications including premature birth, infants growing larger than normal which can lead to difficulties in delivery, and babies being born with health issues. If detected and treated early, women with gestational diabetes can still experience a normal healthy pregnancy. While anyone can develop gestational diabetes, there are risk factors that can increase the likelihood. These include obesity, having developed gestation diabetes during an earlier pregnancy, and a family history of diabetes.
Glucose tolerance testing measures blood glucose levels over time after ingesting glucose to see if the blood levels rise and fall normally. Testing is performed in several steps.
- A fasting blood sample will be drawn.
- You will be given a glucose solution to drink.
- 3 more blood samples will be drawn at 1,2, and 3-hour intervals.
Testing for gestational diabetes may be ordered during pregnancy. The most common time to take the test is when you are 24-28 weeks pregnant. Earlier testing may be recommended for women with an increased risk. Glucose tolerance testing may be ordered as a followup when someone has irregular results from a Fasting Glucose Blood Test.
Glucose tolerance testing can also be useful for people with symptoms or risk factors of type 2 diabetes. Both a 2 Hour Tolerance and 3 Hour Tolerance test are available.
Turnaround for this test is typically 1-2 business days.
