Description:
Gestational Diabetes Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test is used as a screen for Gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes is a condition which may develop in women during pregnancy. It is caused by the hormones produced by the placenta which block the normal functions of insulin. Gestational Diabetes causes high blood sugar which can affect both the mother's and the infant's health if not properly managed. After delivery, blood sugar typically returns to normal but the mother will have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The Gestational Diabetes Blood Test is usually ordered during a pregnancy to see if the mother needs a special diet or medication to control her blood sugar. A doctor should be consulted to determine the optimum time to have this test done.
For additional testing options, please see our Prenatal Testing Category.
Turnaround time for the Gestational Diabetes Screen is typically 1 business day.
