Description:
Insulin Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures Insulin levels in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin is vital for transporting glucose (sugar), which is the body's main source of energy, to the cells. As blood sugar levels rise, more insulin is produced. If a person's body does not produce enough insulin, glucose cannot get into the cells and blood sugar levels rise to unhealthy levels. This can cause a number of disorders affecting the kidneys, heart, vision and nervous system. Diabetes, which results from low insulin production and high glucose levels, can cause a number of health problems and may be life threatening. The Insulin test may be used to diagnose diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia or to determine insulin production.
Insulin testing is often done to aid in the diagnosis of diabetes or to monitor treatment for diabetes. This test may be done as a followup for someone with abnormal Blood Glucose levels. When someone is taking insulin to treat diabetes, a C-Peptide Blood Test is often done to help differentiate between insulin being taken as medication and insulin produced by the body.
Customers taking Insulin for Diabetes who need a more detailed test can also order the Insulin Free and Total test.
Turnaround time for the Insulin test is typically 1 business day.
