Insulin, Free and Total Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures both Free and Total Insulin in the blood. Some people who take insulin may develop antibodies which will bind to some of the insulin in their blood. Insulin which is bound to antibodies is not available to be used by the body. Free Insulin is the portion of insulin which is unbound. Total Insulin represents both free and bound insulin. Measuring both free and total insulin can help provide more accurate information about the relationship between a person's insulin dose and their blood sugar levels.
The Insulin Free and Total test is usually ordered by people who are taking insulin for diabetes. Results from this test should be evaluated by a doctor to help determine if someone is taking the proper dosage of insulin. Results will typically vary depending on the person and the type of insulin medication they are taking.
