Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) Test (LabCorp)
This test provides a measurement for Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate or eGFR. EGFR refers to the amount of blood per minute which is filtered by glomeruli in the kidneys. In a person with impaired kidney function, the glomerular filtration rate decreases which can cause waste products to build up in the blood. EGFR is calculated from a person's creatinine levels. This test includes values for eGFR and Creatinine.
Glomerular Filtration Rate is often included as part of routine general health blood work. It can also be ordered specifically to evaluate kidney function when a person is experiencing symptoms such as dark colored or bloody urine, mid-back pain, swelling in the face, arms, legs, wrists or ankles, elevated blood pressure or difficulty urinating.
EGFR is also included as part of a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel.
