Description:
This test measures the level of indican in a urine sample. Indican is a byproduct of bacteria in the intestines breaking down protein. Most indican is excreted from the body in the feces with a small amount removed via the urine. Normally, there is little to no indican detectable in the urine. Elevated urinary indican levels can be a result of a higher than normal amount of protein in the diet. They can also indicate that a person is not properly digesting protein or has an overgrowth of bacteria n their digestive system.
Measuring indican in the urine can aid in diagnosing dysbiosis. Dysbiosis is a condition in which there is an imbalance in the bacterial colonies in the GI tract. Indican can also be elevated in conditions such as Celiac Disease, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It may also be caused by intestinal obstruction, stomach cancer, gastric ulcers, liver disease, and candida infections. Common symptoms of disorders that cause elevated indican include diarrhea, bloating, gas, and stomach pain.
Abnormal results for this test should be discussed with your doctor. Additional follow-up testing may be necessary.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-15 business days.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
Requirements:
Indican levels typically decrease throughout the day so it is recommended that samples be provided first thing in the morning.
