Description:
Intrinsic Factor Antibody Blood Test
This test measures Intrinsic Factor Antibodies in the blood. Intrinsic Factor is a protein which binds with Vitamin B12 and allows it to be absorbed by the body during digestion. In people with the autoimmune disorder Pernicious Anemia, the immune system produces antibodies against intrinsic factor. This interferes with the normal process through which the body absorbs vitamin B12. Without sufficient levels of B12, the body cannot produce red blood cells which leads to the development of anemia.
This test may be ordered when a person has Vitamin B12 deficiency to help determine the cause. It may be ordered when someone has symptoms of anemia to help determine which type it is. Additional tests such as Methylmalonic Acid, Homocysteine, Vitamin B12 & Folate or Antiparietal Cell Antibodies may sometimes be ordered as a follow-up.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.
