Homocysteine Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of the amino acid Homocysteine in the blood. Because certain vitamins are necessary to metabolize homocysteine, elevated levels are often found in people suffering from Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. This test can indicate a deficiency earlier than standard vitamin tests. Higher than normal levels of Homocysteine have also been linked to an increased risk for the development of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.
This test is typically ordered when a person is showing symptoms of malnutrition or vitamin B12 or folate deficiency such as dizziness, fatigue, weakness, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath or sore mouth and tongue. Homocysteine is also ordered when someone has a family history of cardiac events or have been diagnosed with a condition relating to heart disease but do not have other well established risk factors. People testing to assess risk for heart disease will often order homocysteine in conjunction with other heart health tests for a more complete screening.
Turnaround time for the Homocysteine test is typically 2-5 business days.
