Description:
Iodine Blood Test (LabCorp)
This test measures Iodine levels in the blood. Iodine is an element that is essential for healthy functioning in many organs and systems such as the thyroid, heart, liver, lungs, and immune system. Proper iodine levels aid in the production of thyroid hormones. Too little or too much iodine can contribute to thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
An iodine test is typically ordered when someone shows irregular results from thyroid tests such as TSH, T3, and T4 to help determine if abnormal iodine levels are a contributing factor. This test may also be ordered when someone is experiencing symptoms associated with iodine poisoning such as burning of the mouth, throat, or stomach, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, and low pulse.
A Urine Iodine test is also available to measure the amount of iodine being excreted from the body and help determine if a person is getting healthy amounts of Iodine from the food they eat. Customers looking for additional thyroid testing may wish to order our Thyroid Basic Panel with TSH.
The turnaround time for this test is typically 4 business days.
