Description:
Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) Test
This test measures levels of Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE) in the blood. NSE is an enzyme which is secreted by certain types of tumors. NSE is most commonly used to aid in diagnosing or monitoring treatment for Small Cell Carcinoma, an aggressive form of lung cancer which typically affects smokers. Measuring NSE levels can help to determine how quickly the cancer is growing and help to predict how well a person will respond to treatment. NSE may be elevated in other forms of cancer such as Neuroblastoma as well. This test is not recommended for use as a screen for cancer.
An NSE test is typically ordered when a person has been diagnosed with Small Cell Carcinoma or other forms of cancer to help determine how far along the disease is or how well a person is responding to treatment.
Turnaround for this test is typically 6-12 business days.
