What does an opiate drug test look for?
Opiates are a class of drugs that are either derived from or mimic substances found in the opium poppy plant. They can be prescribed to treat pain but are often used illegally for the euphoric high they produce. Opiates are highly addictive and contribute to a large number of overdoses in the USA. Opioid overdoses are often fatal.
The opiates urine test looks for the presence of codeine and morphine, 2 of the most common forms of opiates, in a urine sample. A positive result will provide a numerical value for the level of drug detected.
How long are opiates detectable in urine?
Codeine and morphine will typically be detectable on a urine test for 1-3 days after use. The detection period can vary based on how much and how often a person uses them and other factors such as their individual metabolism.
What is the difference between codeine and morphine?
Codeine is a less potent form of morphine. In the body, codeine is metabolized into morphine. As a result, a person taking codeine will often test positive for both codeine and morphine.
Is Heroin the same as morphine?
Heroin is a drug made from morphine. Heroin use will typically result in positive morphine test results. However, this test cannot differentiate between the use of heroin and other opioid medications. A test for 6-acetylmorphine, a metabolite specific to heroin is also available.
Can poppy seeds cause you to fail a drug test?
Poppy seeds come from the same plants that are used to produce morphine. It is possible to test positive for codeine and/or morphine after ingesting poppy seeds or products that contain the seeds. The amount of seeds necessary to affect the results of a drug test is difficult to determine. Positive test results will not be able to distinguish between eating poppy seeds and actual drug use. It is generally recommended that a person avoid eating poppy seeds prior to taking a drug test.

Opiate urine test results typically take 1-3 business days if the test is negative. If the initial screening detects anything, additional confirmatory testing will be necessary. This can take up to 7 business days to complete.
