Protein and Creatinine Urine Test

Test Code: 003129
Specimen Type: Urine

Description:

Protein and Creatinine Urine Test

This test measures Protein and Creatinine levels in a urine sample. Results will provide measurements for protein, creatinine and the protein/creatinine ratio. Normally, the kidneys filter out protein and return it to the blood so little to no protein should be present in the urine. When protein is present, it may be indicative of kidney damage or other conditions such as infections or high levels of stress. Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle metabolism which is typically excreted out of the body in urine at a constant rate. Measuring creatinine along with protein in a single urine sample and calculating the ratio between the two will normally give an accurate measure of protein being excreted from the body. This method is easier for some people than collecting a 24 hour urine sample which can also be used to measure protein levels.

A Protein and Creatinine Urine Test may be ordered as a follow up to a Complete Urinalysis test when results show the presence of protein. It may also be ordered when a person has symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Disease. Blood tests such as a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel or Protein Electrophoresis may be done as a follow up to a Urine Protein test.

As an alternative to this test, customers may also order a Protein 24 Hour Urine Test.

Turnaround time for the Protein and Creatinine, Random Urine test is typically 1 business day.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

The Protein and Creatinine, Random Urine test has no special requirements.
