Protein C Deficiency Test Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test provides 2 measurements for Protein C. Protein C is one of 2 proteins that work together to regulate the formation of blood clots. Protein C along with Protein S helps ensure proper clotting to stop bleeding when the body is injured as well as ensuring that excessive unnecessary clotting does not take place. People who do not have enough of either Protein C or S or have proteins that are not functioning properly can suffer from clotting disorders such as deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. A deficiency in Protein C can be due to an inherited condition or caused by underlying disorders such as liver disease, kidney disease, cancer, or severe infection.
This test includes measurements for:
- Protein C Antigen
- Protein C Activity (Functional)
Measuring both the quantity and function of the protein can help differentiate between different types of disorders. Protein C testing is often ordered when a person has unexplained recurrent blood clots or has a family history of blood clotting disorders. Repeat testing may be necessary after someone has taken anticoagulant medication. A test to measure Protein S is also available. Typically Protein S and C are evaluated together.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.
