Description:
Protein S Activity (Functional) Blood Test
This test measures Protein S Activity, also called Functional Protein S. Protein S is one of 2 proteins that work together to regulate the formation of blood clots. Protein S along with Protein C helps ensure proper clotting to stop bleeding when the body is injured as well as ensuring that excessive unnecessary clotting does not take place. People who do not have enough of either Protein C or S or have proteins that are not functioning properly can suffer from clotting disorders such as deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. This test measures the function or activity of a person's protein S. In protein S function is low, there's an increased risk of developing irregular blood clots.
Protein S testing is often ordered when a person has unexplained recurrent blood clots or has a family history of blood clotting disorders. A Protein C Activity is often ordered along with Protein s. We also offer a Protein S Deficiency Panel which includes measurements for both the level and activity of protein S. A Protein C and S panel which evaluates both is also available.
Turnaround for this test is typically 2-4 business days.
