Protein C and Protein S Deficiency Panel Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test provides several measurements for Protein C and Protein S. Protein C and S are 2 proteins that work together to regulate the formation of blood clots. Protein C and S help ensure proper clotting to stop bleeding when the body is injured as well as ensuring that excessive unnecessary clotting does not take place. People who do not have enough of either Protein C or S or have proteins that are not functioning properly can suffer from clotting disorders such as deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. A deficiency in these proteins can be due to an inherited condition or caused by underlying disorders such as liver disease, kidney disease, cancer, or severe infection.
This test includes measurements for:
- Protein C Antigen
- Protein C Activity (Functional)
- Protein S Total
- Protein S Free
- Protein S Activity (Functional)
Measuring both the quantity and function of the proteins can help differentiate between different types of disorders. Protein C and S testing are often ordered when a person has unexplained recurrent blood clots or has a family history of blood clotting disorders. Repeat testing may be necessary after someone has taken anticoagulant medication. While they are usually ordered together, separate blood tests for Protein C and Protein S are also available.
