Prothrombin Time (PT INR) Blood Test

Prothrombin Time Blood Test Online

Description:

Prothrombin Time (PT INR) Blood Test (Labcorp)

The Prothrombin Time test (PT test) is used to determine how long it takes for blood to clot. Prothrombin is a protein produced by the liver that aids in the blood clotting process. This test provides a measurement for how long the clotting process takes. The PT test may be done to aid in the diagnosis of bleeding disorders, to help diagnose liver problems, or to screen for bleeding disorders prior to surgery.

This test is also used to monitor people taking the anticoagulant Warfarin (Coumadin). This drug is typically prescribed to people who have issues with recurrent blood clots. For people taking Warfarin, it is important to maintain the right balance to prevent clots and avoid excessive bleeding. For this reason, the measurement for International Normalized Ratio (INR) is also included with the PT test. INR is a calculation which allows for an accurate comparison of PT test results from different manufacturers performed at different laboratories.

This test is often ordered with a Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT) Test.  Customers who need both tests can order our PT and PTT Blood Test package.

Turnaround time for the PT test is typically 1 business day.
