Specimen Type: Blood
|
Description:
This test measures the level of Protein S Antigen in the blood. Protein S is one of 2 proteins that work together to regulate the formation of blood clots. Protein S along with Protein C helps ensure proper clotting to stop bleeding when the body is injured as well as ensuring that excessive unnecessary clotting does not take place. People who do not have enough of either Protein S or C or have proteins that are not functioning properly can suffer from clotting disorders such as deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. A deficiency in protein S can be due to an inherited condition or caused by underlying disorders such as liver disease, kidney disease, cancer, or severe infection.
This test measures the level of total protein S antigen. Depending on the type of deficiency a person has, it may be necessary to test other forms of protein S as well. Testing for Free Protein S and Protein S Activity can provide more information about the cause of a deficiency. In addition to the individual tests, a Protein S Deficiency Panel which measures total protein S antigen and activity is also available.
Turnaround for this test is typically 4-8 business days.
