Description:
This test measures the level of Anti-Ribonucleoprotein or RNP antibodies in a blood sample. RNP is a type of autoantibody. In people with autoimmune disorders, these antibodies are produced by the immune system and attack the body's own cells and tissues. Autoimmune disorders can sometimes be difficult to diagnose because they often display similar symptoms. Testing for various types of antibodies can help differentiate between disorders. Elevated RNP antibodies are typically seen in people with connective tissue disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and lupus. Common symptoms of these disorders include muscle and joint pain, swelling and inflammation in the fingers or hands, numbness in the extremities, fatigue, and fever.
An RNP test is typically ordered as a followup to positive results on an Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) test. Depending on a person's symptoms, additional testing may be necessary to identify what type of disorder a person is affected by. For more testing options, please see our Autoimmune Disease Testing category.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-8 business days.
