What is Sickle Cell Trait?

Sickle cell trait is an inherited condition in which one of a person's parents passes them a gene that can lead to the development of sickle-shaped red blood cells, or hemoglobin.  Most sickle cell trait carriers do not develop sickle cell disease, also called sickle cell anemia.  Sickle cell disease occurs when a person inherits sickle cell genes from both parents.  Most people with sickle cell trait will not experience any health problems.

Why do NCAA athletes need to take a sickle cell test?

Most cases of sickle cell trait are benign.  However, for athletes, who often push their bodies to extreme conditions, there is a higher probability that they may develop sickle-shaped red blood cells.  This can cause the blockage of blood vessels and prevent oxygen from reaching muscles and other tissues.  The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) requires most college athletes to take a sickle cell trait test, known as a Hemoglobin Solubility Test to check if they have sickle cell trait.  In most cases, having sickle cell trait does not bar an athlete from participation.  It is a precautionary measure to determine which athletes may be at higher risk and prepare accordingly.
