Description:

Sickle Cell Hemoglobin Solubility Blood Test (Labcorp)

The Hemoglobin Solubility test is the most common way to screen for Sickle Cell Disease Trait.  This test looks for the presence of abnormal Hemoglobin S in a blood sample by adding an agent to the blood sample that will cause a reaction if Hemoglobin S, which is less soluble than other forms of hemoglobin, is present.  The presence of Hemoglobin S typically means that a person has Sickle Cell Anemia Disease or that they have Sickle Cell Trait.

Sickle Cell Anemia is a condition that causes people to develop red blood cells which are curved or "sickle" shaped.  These abnormally shaped cells can block blood vessels.  Symptoms of Sickle Cell can include recurring pain in the hands, feet, back, stomach, or chest, weakness, and fatigue.  Sickle Cell is an inherited condition and parents with sickle cell genes have a risk of passing them to their children.  If both parents are sickle cell carriers, the risk of passing it on is increased.  People with one sickle cell gene typically do not experience symptoms but may experience muscle pain or other issues during strenuous exercise.  As a result, many student-athletes are required to test for sickle cell trait.

Hemoglobin Solubility testing is often done as a prenatal test to determine if one or both parents are sickle cell carriers.  Newborns are typically tested because having sickle cell genes puts them at higher risk for infections.  Athletes often test for Sickle Cell as well to determine if their health may be at risk.  Positive results for this test are often followed up with a Hemoglobin Electrophoresis test which provides more detailed information on abnormal hemoglobin types and helps differentiate Sickle Cell Trait from Sickle Cell Disease.

The Hemoglobin Solubility test cannot differentiate between people with Sickle Cell trait and people who have Sickle Cell Anemia.  Positive results should be followed up with a doctor who may recommend additional testing.

Turnaround time for the Hemoglobin (Hb) Solubility test is typically 1-3 business days.
