Sickle cell anemia is an inherited condition.  A person can inherit the sickle cell gene from one or both of their parents.  Inheriting 2 sickle cell genes increase the likelihood of developing sickle cell disease.  Sickle cell trait refers to a person who has one sickle cell gene.  They can pass this gene to their offspring.  It's important to know if one or both parents have sickle cell trait when they plan to become pregnant.  If both parents have sickle cell trait they can discuss the potential complications it could cause for their children with a doctor.  Knowing what to look for ahead of time can help reduce the risk of sickle cell anemia affecting their child's health.

Should pregnant women get a SIckle Cell Test?

Ideally, both partners should take a sickle cell trait test before conceiving.  Once a pregnancy occurs, if either parent does not know their status, they should be tested.  Since sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy, so if the pregnant woman is unaware of their status, they should be tested.  A Hemoglobin Solubility test is a simple blood test that can check for sickle cell trait.  The test usually sees results in as little as 1-2 business days.  If necessary, additional testing can be performed by a doctor to determine if the baby will have sickle cell trait or disease.
