TB T-Spot Blood Test

Tuberculosis, IGRA

Test Code: 37737
Specimen Type: Blood
Online TB T-spot test

Description:

TB (Tuberculosis) T-Spot Test (Quest)

The T-Spot blood test is used to aid in the diagnosis of Tuberculosis.  This test measures several factors related to the body's immune system to determine if an infection with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, the bacteria that cause TB, may be present.  The T-Spot is one of only 2 IGRA (Interferon-Gamma Release Assay) blood tests for TB approved by the FDA.  Blood testing for TB requires only one visit to the lab as opposed to the 2-step skin test.  Studies show that for people who have been previously vaccinated for Tuberculosis, blood testing has a lower likelihood of false positives than a skin test.  In clinical trials, the T-Spot blood test had an accuracy and specificity exceeding 95%.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that typically affects the lungs.  TB bacteria is spread through the air from one person to another. While TB is not as common in the United States as it once was, there is still a risk posed by TB infection.  Most people who are infected with TB develop a latent infection in which the bacteria is present in their body but controlled by their immune system.  People with latent TB infections will not experience any symptoms and are unlikely to spread the disease to others.  If left untreated, a latent infection may persist for a person's lifetime without causing any illness.  Most latent infections will show positive results on a Tuberculosis blood test.  Latent TB can be treated to prevent it from developing into a more serious condition.  In some people, a latent infection may progress to active TB disease.  In this state, the virus is multiplying and they are infectious to other people.  An active TB infection can develop shortly after the initial exposure or later in life after years of being in a latent state.  People whose immune systems are weakened due to age, certain surgical procedures, or other illnesses such as HIV, cancer, drug abuse, or kidney disease are more likely to develop active TB disease.  People with an active TB infection may experience symptoms that include chest pain, chronic cough, fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, fever, chills, and night sweats.  A positive TB blood test can be followed up with additional testing as recommended by a person's doctor to determine if they have active TB disease.

The T-Spot is often ordered when a person has symptoms of tuberculosis, especially if they have been exposed to someone who is diagnosed with TB or have been to parts of the world where TB is prevalent.  Some people may be required to take a TB test for work, school, or travel.  Request A Test also offers the Quantiferon Plus TB blood test.  The Quantiferon Test is also approved by the FDA for the detection of TB infections.

Turnaround for this test is typically 3-6 business days.
