Test for Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer accounts for about 3% of all cancer cases in the United States and 7% of cancer-related deaths. Diagnosing pancreatic cancer early can increase a person's chances of a positive outcome. There are often no symptoms in the early stages of pancreatic cancer so screening tests can be the best way to identify it. When symptoms do occur they can include belly pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice, dark-colored urine, pain or swelling in the arms or legs, and weakness. Screening is especially important for people with risk factors such as being over the age of 65, smoking, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heavy alcohol consumption, and family history.
Is there a Blood Test for Pancreatic Cancer?
While blood testing alone cannot rule out or positively diagnose pancreatic cancer, there are several tests that can provide related information and help assess your risk level. Cancer of the pancreas can affect your liver function which may cause symptoms such as yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice). A liver function panel provides several measurements that can help with identifying the cause of these symptoms. CA 19-9 and Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) are tumor markers that are often elevated in people with pancreatic cancer. Abnormal results on these tests will require follow-up by your doctor. These tests can also be helpful in monitoring a person's response to treatment. Abnormal results on these tests will require follow-up by your doctor. Additional testing will often be necessary to make a diagnosis.
