Description:
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures levels of Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies in the blood. Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme produced by the thyroid gland which aids in the conversion of T4 to T3. TPO antibodies are produced when a person has an autoimmune disorder such as Graves Disease or Hashimotos Thyroiditis which causes the body to attack the tissue in the thyroid gland. Some people may have TPO antibodies present even if they do not currently have a thyroid disease. This can put them at increased risk for developing a thyroid disorder.
TPO Antibodies test is often ordered when a person has symptoms of thyroid disease, especially if they have had irregular results from other thyroid tests, to help diagnose the cause. Pregnant women with autoimmune disorders often have a TPO Abs test done to help determine if their infant will be at risk of thyroid dysfunction.
The Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies test is also included in our Thyroid Antibodies panel which also looks for Antithyroglobulin Antibodies.
Turnaround time for a Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies test is typically 1-3 business days.
