Test Code: 001735
Specimen Type: Blood
Thyroxine-binding Globulin Test Online

Description:

Thyroxine-binding Globulin Blood Test

This test measures a protein in the blood which helps move thyroid hormones throughout the body.  Thyroxine-Binding Globulin (TBG) is produced in the liver and binds to T3 and T4 to carry them through the bloodstream.  This test can be useful for evaluating thyroid function and aiding in the diagnosis of disorders which affect thyroid hormone production.  Abnormal TBG levels can be a result of a number of conditions such as pregnancy, abnormal estrogen levels, taking oral contraceptives, some types of medications and steroids, and a genetic predisposition.

This test is usually ordered when someone has had abnormal results from Thyroid tests like T3 and T4 to help determine if it is related to their Thyroxine-Binding Globulin levels.  This test is particularly relevant if TSH levels are normal but T3 and/or T4 are out of range.

Turnaround time for the Thyroxine-Binding Globulin test is typically 1-3 business days.
