Description:
Titanium Blood Test
This test measures levels of Titanium in the blood. Titanium is a common element found in the ground, water and air in many areas. Compounds containing titanium are used in a number of industries including those which produce paint, cosmetics, plastics, paper and food. Titanium is also used in some prosthetic implants and artificial joints. People working in industrial settings where titanium is used may be at risk of breathing in titanium particles. Implants containing titanium may wear down over time releasing titanium into the body. Small amounts of titanium are not typically considered harmful as they are excreted from the body as waste products without being absorbed. There is currently little information on health issues that may be caused by long term exposure to titanium. However, industrial exposure can irritate the lungs and may worsen preexisting lung conditions. For people with an allergy to titanium, even normal exposure levels can cause health problems.
The titanium blood test is typically ordered when someone is concerned about exposure to titanium in the workplace. It may also be ordered when someone has an implant or prosthetic which contains titanium to see if it is breaking down. The presence of elevated titanium blood levels can be an indicator of wear on a person's implant even if it is not causing any health problems.
