Description:
Albumin, Urine (24-hour) Test (Labcorp)
A Microalbumin test is used to detect small amounts of the protein Albumin in a person's urine. This test can be used to detect early signs of kidney damage. Healthy kidneys normally prevent proteins from being filtered out of the body. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, Albumin is usually one of the first proteins to leak out of the body. Early detection of kidney disease can help a person and their doctor to determine the best method of treatment.
The microalbumin urine test is usually performed when someone had increased risk factors for kidney disease such as high blood pressure or diabetes. It may also be used to monitor treatment for conditions that cause kidney damage. This test uses a 24-hour urine sample which can be more useful than measuring albumin levels in a single random urine specimen. A Random Urine Microalbumin Test is also available.
Please note that blood in the urine will affect the accuracy of this test. Any condition which causes blood in the urine should be treated and resolved before ordering this test.
Turnaround for the 24-hour microalbumin urine test is typically 1-2 business days.
