What should you know about your blood type?

There are 8 main blood types, A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, and O-.  The first part, ABO, refers to whether your red blood cells have specific antigens (A or B) in them.  You can have one or the other or both or neither.  Someone who is type O has neither of the A or B antigens.  The plus or minus in your blood type refers to a protein called Rh factor.  + means you have it and - means you don't.  O- is known as the universal donor because it can be given to anyone regardless of their blood type.  O- blood is often used in emergencies when there is no time to check the recipient's blood type.  O- blood is in high demand and people with the universal donor blood type are highly encouraged to donate blood.  AB+ is known as the universal recipient blood type.  People with AB+ blood can receive any other type of blood safely.
