What should you know about your blood type?
Your blood type tells you whether you have specific proteins and antigens in your blood. This is very important if you ever need a blood transfusion or organ transplant, or want to be a donor. Knowing your blood type makes it easy to tell which blood types you can receive or who can accept your blood type. If someone is given a transfusion from an incompatible blood group, their immune system will see the blood cells are foreign invaders and attack them.
Why knowing your blood type is important?
There are 8 main blood types, A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, and O-. The first part, ABO, refers to whether your red blood cells have specific antigens (A or B) in them. You can have one or the other or both or neither. Someone who is type O has neither of the A or B antigens. The plus or minus in your blood type refers to a protein called Rh factor. + means you have it and - means you don't. O- is known as the universal donor because it can be given to anyone regardless of their blood type. O- blood is often used in emergencies when there is no time to check the recipient's blood type. O- blood is in high demand and people with the universal donor blood type are highly encouraged to donate blood. AB+ is known as the universal recipient blood type. People with AB+ blood can receive any other type of blood safely.
What is the easiest way to find out your blood type?
A simple blood test can tell you your blood type. If you don't already have this information, knowing it can save your life, or someone else's. Most blood type tests see results in just a day or 2 so you can get answers quickly. Take charge of your health and find out your blood type now.
