24 hour Sodium Urine Test

Na

Test Code: 003178
Specimen Type: Urine

Description:

24 hour Sodium Urine Test

This test measures sodium levels in a 24-hour urine sample.  Sodium is an important electrolyte which contributes to a number of healthy bodily functions.  The kidneys are responsible for eliminating excess sodium from the body.  When sodium levels are too high it can be an indicator of Kidney failure.  Other issues such as dehydration, diarrhea, recent vomiting, an underactive thyroid, heart failure, and cirrhosis can cause abnormally high or low sodium levels.  Measuring sodium in a 24-hour sample can be more useful than a single random collection since it looks at the total amount secreted over the course of a day.

A urine sodium test is often ordered as a followup to irregular results on a Sodium Blood Test.

Turnaround for this test is typically 1-3 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

A specimen container will need to be obtained from the draw site prior to beginning 24-hour specimen collection.

Void at 8 AM and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning). Screw the lid on securely. The container must be labeled with full name, date and time collection started, and date and time collection finished.  Return the specimen container to the draw site.
