This test measures the level of 3a Androstanediol Glucuronide in a blood sample.  Androstanediol glucuronide is a hormone produced by the metabolism of testosterone.  Testing is most commonly ordered to aid in identifying the cause of hirsutism in women.  Hirsutism is a condition that usually results from a hormonal imbalance.  The most common symptom is the growth of dark facial or body hair.  Other symptoms include a deepened voice, increase muscle mass, and acne.  Causes can include tumors on the ovaries or adrenal glands, Cushing's Syndrome, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and some medications.
