Description:
AChR (Acetylcholine Receptor) Blocking Antibody Serum Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Acetylcholine Receptor (ACHR) Blocking Antibodies in serum (blood). ACHR antibodies are a type of autoantibody produced by the immune system which mistakenly targets proteins in the muscles. These proteins, called acetylcholine receptors, allow communication between nerve and muscle fibers. Damage to these proteins caused by ACHR antibodies can cause muscle fatigue. ACHR antibodies are associated with the autoimmune disorder Myasthenia Gravis (MG). People with myasthenia gravis typically experience symptoms such as drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty holding up their head, difficulty breathing, difficulty walking, and weakness in muscles throughout the body.
There are 3 types of ACHR antibodies that each affect the receptor proteins in different ways. Blocking antibodies are found in about 50% of people with MG. They sit on the receptors and prevent acetylcholine from binding. The other 2 types are Binding and Modulating antibodies.
Testing for ACHR-blocking antibodies may be ordered when a person is experiencing common symptoms of myasthenia gravis. Results can help to diagnose MG or differentiate it from other conditions with similar symptoms. A blocking antibody test is not commonly ordered by itself. It is more useful when measured with other ACHR antibody types. A Myasthenia Gravis Panel which looks at all 3 types of AChR antibodies is also available.
Turnaround for the AChR Blocking serum test is typically 4-8 business days.
