Apolipoprotein B Blood Test

Apo B

Test Code: 167015
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Apolipoprotein B Blood Test

This test measures the level of Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) in the blood.  Apo B is one of the primary components of LDL (the "bad" cholesterol).  Elevated Apo B levels are associated with an increased risk for Coronary Heart Disease.  A person's Apo B level will typically rise along with their LDL. However, some people may show elevated Apo B levels even when their other cholesterol levels are normal.  In these cases, monitoring Apo B can help to evaluate how much a risk a person is at for developing heart disease.

The Apo B test is usually ordered along with other tests such as a Lipid Panel or NMR Lipoprofile to assess risk for heart disease.  This test is also ordered when someone has a family history of heart disease or to monitor someone who is being treated for high cholesterol.

Turnaround time for the Apolipoprotein B test is typically 1-3 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

The Apolipoprotein B test requires fasting for 12 - 14 hours prior to going in for blood collection.
