Description:
Benzene Exposure Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Benzene in a blood sample. Benzene is one of the most widely used chemicals in the United States. Products that utilize benzene in their manufacture include oil, gasoline, chemicals, plastics, resins, synthetic fibers, lubricants, adhesives, rubber, dyes, paint, detergents, drugs, and pesticides. Benzene is also found in cigarette smoke and the emissions from the burning of oil and gas. The most common source of benzene toxicity is in people who are exposed to benzene in industrial settings. Higher than normal benzene concentrations are also commonly found in the air around factories and gas stations. Runoff and pollution from factories can also cause contamination in the soil and water in surrounding areas.
Acute benzene poisoning can cause symptoms that include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, headache, shaking, confusion, or loss of consciousness. Longer-term exposure can interfere with the normal functioning of various types of cells throughout the body. Anemia caused by a loss of red blood cells or a weakened immune system from loss of white blood cells has been attributed to benzene exposure. Other health complications from chronic exposure can include bleeding disorders, leukemia, irregular menstrual periods, and for pregnant women, an increased likelihood of birth defects.
This test is usually ordered when a person who works in or lives near an industrial setting is suspected of suffering from benzene exposure. For more testing options, please see our Heavy Metals Testing category.
