How do you test for bone health?

The tests in this package measure biomarkers that are important for bone health and bone quality.  While these tests cannot diagnose conditions like osteoporosis, they can provide useful information that can help a person work with their doctor to determine if extra steps are necessary to improve their bone health.

This package includes: 

• Alkaline Phosphatase, Bone Specific: An enzyme produced by healthy growing bones.
• Calcium: Calcium is an important factor for bone density.
• Parathyroid Hormone (PTH): This hormone helps to regulate the levels of calcium and other minerals in the body.
• Renal Function: Includes several measurements that help assess your kidney health.  If kidney function is impaired, the body will leach calcium from the bones, which can weaken them.
• Vitamin D: Healthy vitamin D levels allow your body to properly absorb calcium.

If your test results come back abnormal, it is important to follow up with your doctor.  Additional testing, including bone density scans, may be necessary.
