Description:
Parathyroid Hormone, Intact Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) levels in the blood. Parathyroid hormone is secreted by the parathyroid glands as part of the process through which the body maintains healthy calcium levels. Intact PTH is the most commonly ordered Parathyroid Hormone test. PTH testing can aid in the diagnosis of the cause for abnormally high or low calcium levels.
The PTH test is commonly ordered as a follow up to abnormal results on a blood calcium test. It may be ordered along with a calcium test when a person is experiencing symptoms of high calcium (fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain or unusual thirst) or low calcium (abdominal pains, muscle cramps, tingling in the toes or fingers). PTH testing can also be ordered to monitor treatment for parathyroid disorders or chronic kidney disease.
Turnaround time for the Parathyroid Hormone test is typically 1 business day.
