Blood Testing for Leukemia

One of the primary blood tests done to aid in identifying Leukemia is a Complete Blood Count (CBC.)  A CBC provides a variety of numbers including white blood cell count, red blood cell count, and platelet count.  Low levels of platelets or red blood cells along with high levels of white blood cells can be indicative of Leukemia.  A CBC test also includes a white blood cell differentiation that can help to identify Leukemia cells.  A comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) can also be helpful.  A CMP looks at measurements related to organ function including the liver and kidneys.  This can help to determine how far the leukemia has spread.  Blood testing cannot diagnose Leukemia by itself.  However, abnormal values for this test along with a person's symptoms can help their doctor determine if further testing is necessary.  A physical exam, imaging tests, or a bone marrow biopsy may be necessary to complete a diagnosis.

How it Works

What are the signs of Leukemia?

Leukemia is a cancer that affects the tissues in the body that produce blood cells.  Leukemia usually starts in the bone marrow. Abnormal cells reproduce out of control, blocking the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.  This prevents the organs and tissues in our body from getting the oxygen they need.  It also impedes the body's ability to fight infections and form blood clots.  In the early stages of Leukemia, some people don't notice any unusual symptoms.  As the condition worsens, common symptoms include fatigue, fever, frequent infections, shortness of breath, pale skin, unusual weight loss, joint pain, pain in the ribs, swollen lymph nodes, and easy bruising.  Often, the first step to diagnosing Leukemia is routine blood work.
